The HARC Elmer Net
Table of Contents
Introduction
In ham radio parlance, an elmer means a teacher. The HARC Elmer Net ran until September 29, 2021. Starting in October I became the net control for theHARC Weekly net, which meets at 08:00 PM on Wednesday nights. I will retain the best parts of the Elmer Net, offering a welcoming forum to ask your ham radio questions. Come and join us on the WM3PEN repeater in Philadelphia, 146.685 MHz, with a PL of 146.2 Hz.

KD4UTL brought up antiquated smoke alarms. It has happened with me.
Ed, KB3IV at Philmont has experience building indoor dipoles. An interesting configuration: one leg on the ceiling, one limb on the baseboard. This doubles the possible space.
N1LC also recommends the end fed. It looks like the way to go. They can zigzag or slope, the wire just can't loop back on itself. I recommended a 9:1 Balun at the antenna and a 1:1 balun at the transceiver.
BalunDesigns.com make good baluns, and they also have good instructions. Thanks AJ3DI.
N3ZZK mentioned the copper tint on new condo windows to reduce UV. Watch out for the tips of the dipole, they carry high voltage. Wire strung around indoors can increase the chances of RFI.

NW3T has an upcoming VE sesion on Saturday and hopes to travel next month.
N3ZZK went on vacation to New England. He stopped at W1AW! He just missed getting in on the operating time after 03:45 PM. They send out messages after that. Very small. Four rooms. Each room had an opearating station. You can use all the antennas. At some point Saul will put his pictures on groups.io. They have up to a 40 meter beam on 4 towers within 100 ft of the building. Plus a couple dipoles for 160 and 80 meters, and 1 towers dedicated to VHF/UHF. He also went to Maine and went closest to the international timezone, a lighthouse at Arcadia park. He had a mobile station and keyed a VE repeater. Cell phones switch over. A VE2 came came back. Usingn3ZZK/1 on 2 meters. We have begun discussing doing a study group to upgrade to our extras.
K3CL will go back to school next week. Phil-mont had a hackathon at Field Day to try getting GNU Radio working without success. It crahed running the simplest program.
W3AZT started working with FLDigi. Experimenting with PSK31 on 40 meters.
